Google Acquires Canadian Studio SocialDeck
We’ve been following Google’s investments into the social games space, and today the search and advertising giant has made yet another move to compete with services like Facebook. Develop reports that the company has acquired SocialDeck, a Canadian start-up studio, for an undisclosed sum. The company created a cross-media platform called Spark to connect users of iPhone, Blackberry, and Facebook.
“We started this company with the goal of connecting friends through social games on all kinds of exciting new mobile devices,” read a statement from SocialDeck. “We’ve been amazed and humbled by all of the stories and experiences our customers have shared with us.”
Google has made several moves in the past months, including an investment in Zynga, discussions with PlayDom, and acquisitions of Slide and Jambool. Google Ventures also invested in ngmoco, though that appears to be less a move into social gaming and more about a financial return. We’d expect the company to make its official gaming announcement any day now, but that may have been delayed by Mark DeLoura exiting Google after only four months.
