The International Car of the Year jury handed down its decisions at the recent 2012 Detroit Auto Show, with Audi and Land Rover emerging as the big winners. Ford, Hyundai, Porsche, Toyota, and Volkswagen also received recognition.

Initiated in 1996 to celebrate the emotional connection between cars and their owners, the International Car of the Year awards–better known as the “ICOTYs”–are granted by a panel of veteran automotive journalists. The Audi A7 won the 2012 Car of the Year award, while Truck of the Year honors went to the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque.

In addition to the Car and Truck of the Year, recognition is given to other vehicles that are deemed the top choices in their respective categories. Compact Car of the Year went to the Ford Focus, with Sedan of the Year going to the Toyota Camry. The Porsche 911 was named Sports Car of the Year, while the Hyundai Veloster took Sporty Coupe of the Year.

Two other awards were handed down that recognize efforts aimed at reducing pollution and global warming. The Earth, Wind & Power Car of the Year went to the Volkswagen Passat TDI, and the Earth Angel Award was given to Ford Motor Company.
