3 Animated Features Nominated in 2019 BAFTA Film Awards

, EE British Academy Film Awards have been announced, with period dramedy The Favourite leading with 12 nominations — including Best Film, Director (Yorgos Lanthimos), Leading Actress (Olivia Colman) and two for Supporting Actress (Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone). Bohemian Rhapsody, First Man, Roma and A Star Is Born each have seven nominations; Vice has six; BlacKkKlansman has five; Cold War and Green Book have four; and Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Mary Poppins Returns Mary Queen of Scots and Stan & Ollie have three nominations each.

Three flicks are vying in the Animated Film category: Pixar’s Incredibles 2, Fox Searchlight’s Isle of Dogs and Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Isle of Dogs is also contending in the Original Music category (composer Alexandre Desplat).

The BAFTA for Animated Film was introduced in 2006, and the results have a strong correlation with the U.S. Academy Awards — BAFTA-winning toons have also won the Animated Feature Oscar the last 10 out of 12 years, the exceptions being Warner’s The LEGO Movie for 2014 and LAIKA’s Kubo and the Two Strings (Oscar nominated) for 2016. Last year, Pixar’s Oscar winner Coco took the prize, winning out over European indies Loving Vincent and My Life as a Courgette, which were both Oscar nominated.

The Awards will be held Sunday, February 10 in London.
