Cheech & Chong haven’t revived their classic film series since 1983′s Still Smokin, so forgive us stoners if we lost faith that the two would unite on the big screen. Thankfully, the ganja gods have smiled down on us, as Rolling Stone reports the two will bring it back, with an assist from Broken Lizard’s Jay Chandrasekhar.
The script is still a work-in-progress, so clearly, filming hasn’t even begun–meaning the movie is a solid 1.5-3 years away from hitting theaters. So it’s going to be released…whenever it’s done, man.
Given that Chong is (a very spry) 75 years old and Cheech is 67, the time is now or never for the duo, and they’re still doing it for the best reason: love of the green. And it sounds hilarious based on the title alone:
“[Jay is] working on a script right now for us,” says Tommy Chong. “We’ve had some preliminary meetings. It looks really good. It looks really funny. It will be about us going to a festival called the Burning Joint. All sorts of shenanigans happen. It’s going to be a lot of fun.” [Rolling Stone]
In case you don’t watch hilarious Comedy Central re-runs and haven’t heard of Broken Lizard, Jay is the writer behind Super Troopers and Beerfest. So, yeah–this is right in his wheelhouse.
And of course, you just can’t go wrong with Cheech & Chong. so obviously, we’re high on whatever the film will entail. Based on the title it sure sounds like a spoof on Burning Man that sends Cheech & Chong to a festival as outdated icons looking to restore the glory years–and then, drugs. Lots and lots of drugs. Maybe even some EDM (god let’s hope not).
While it may not be a Squirrel Master feature length film, it’s the next best thing.
