New-Car Review: 2013 Lexus ES
Vehicle Highlights
2013 Lexus ES: What is it?
The ES is Lexus’ best-selling car. Offered only as a 4-door sedan, the ES slots between the smaller IS and larger GS sedans in Lexus’ model lineup. The ES shares much of its underskin design with the Toyota Camry and Toyota Avalon.
The ES is built in Japan.
2013 Lexus ES: What’s New
The 2013 Lexus ES is redesigned with new styling, new features, a 1.8-inch-longer wheelbase, and the addition of a gas/electric Hybrid model.
2013 Lexus ES: Model Lineup Features and Options
Both the ES 350 and ES 300h come in a single trim level with a high level of equipment. Standard features include a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth wireless cell-phone link, and keyless entry/engine start. A voice-activated navigation system with Lexus’ Remote Touch control interface and Enform infotainment system is optional.
A Premium Package includes a power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, wood interior trim, leather upholstery, and driver-seat memory. A Luxury Package adds heated and ventilated front seats, Park Assist, and a power rear-window sunshade. An Ultra Luxury Package adds ambient interior lighting, front passenger-seat memory, manual rear side-window shades, heated steering wheel, power trunk lid, and, on ES 350s only, a panoramic sunroof.
2013 Lexus ES: Engines, Transmissions, and Drive Wheels
The ES 350 has a 268-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The ES 300h has a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder paired with an electric motor for a combined 200 horsepower, connected to a CVT transmission that behaves much like an automatic.
Both the ES 350 and ES 300h come only with front-wheel drive.
2013 Lexus ES: Fuel Economy
The ES 350 is EPA-rated at 21 city/31 highway. The ES 300h is EPA-rated at 40 city/39 highway. All ES models use regular-grade gas.
We have had no opportunity to measure fuel economy on a 2013 Lexus ES.
2013 Lexus ES: Safety Features
ES models include all the expected safety features plus driver and front-passenger knee airbags, and also offer a rearview camera, blind-spot alert, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, Pre-Collision System, and Safety Connect assistance system.
This evaluation is based on preview test drives of pre-production vehicles.
