Colorado Marijuana Sales Continued Hot Streak in August

Colorado marijuana sales continued their hot streak in August, according to the state Department of Revenue, reaching the highest monthly total ever.

Medical and recreational dispensaries accounted for over $ 173.2 million in sales in August, DOR data shows. That number is easily the highest for monthly sales since recreational pot stores opened in January 2014, passing July 2019’s previous high mark (approximately $ 166.3 million) by about 4 percent. This is the third straight month that dispensary sales have broken Colorado’s monthly record.

Recreational sales on their own also set another record, hitting nearly $ 141.87 million in August. Medical sales, while still hovering in the $ 30 million range, saw a slight bump, increasing just under $ 1 million from the previous month to hit $ 31.3 million.

August is one of three months in 2019 to have five Fridays and five Saturdays on the calendar, and weekends are extremely important to dispensary sales, according to marijuana-industry sales trackers. With cooler weather and fewer weekend days in September, don’t be surprised if the next monthly sales figure drops.

Through the first eight months of 2019, Colorado has already seen over $ 1.15 billion in dispensary sales, and it’s on a clear path to breaking last year’s overall sales of $ 1.55 billion.

Studio Gale, August Media & Synergy88 Prep Pre-K Series ‘Tish Tash’

South Korean animation shop Studio Gale has joined forces with Singapore-based August Media Holdings and Philippines media group Synergy88 Entertainment to produce a new, 2D-animated preschool series Tish Tash (52 x 5’). BAFTA- and Emmy Award-winning U.K. company Karrot Entertainment has also come on board as a development partner.

The series centers on young and hugely imaginative Tish, her bear family, and her larger-than-life imaginary friend, Tash. No matter what troubles they face — be it the age-old terror of long, boring car trips or helping Tish’s baby brother not be sad about losing his favorite toy — these special friends can create new worlds around themselves, embarking on imaginative adventures and finding their own creative angle to help solve any problems that life throws at them.

Tish Tash is created by Studio Gale, and set to enter production in Q1 of 2019. Global distribution duties will be shared by August Media Holdings’ August Rights and by Studio Gale.

Tish Tash will introduce a fantastic and entertaining world through children’s imagination in everyday life which can only be expressed in animation,” said Chang Hwan Shin, CEO of Studio Gale. “As one of the best creative studios in Korea, I am excited to collaborate with August Media, Synergy88 and Karrot Entertainment and guarantee that Tish Tash will fascinate children all over the world!”

Jyotirmoy Saha, CEO of August Media Holdings said, “Tish and Tash are great characters whose beauty lies in the simplicity of the characters and stories. Our partners in this project have a fantastic record of creating and producing quality and award-winning programs that appeal to an international audience, so it was a natural step for us to join forces on such an endearing project.”

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Studio Gale, August Media and Karrot Entertainment in bringing Tish Tash to television. This series promises to entertain and educate and for us it’s another important collaboration to add to our portfolio,” added Jackeline Chua, Managing Partner of Synergy88 Entertainment Media Inc.

“Collaborating with Studio Gale and August Media on Tish Tash has been an exceptionally exciting and rewarding process,” said Karrot Ent. Creative Director Jamie Badminton. “I’m confident that together we’ve developed a truly global show with a very real and relatable family at the centre of it. The show has fresh energy, led by the mind of our main character, Tish; her partnership with her imaginary friend, Tash propels the stories into wild and fantastically charming directions, and provides perfect five-minute bursts of adventure and humor.”

Connecticut primary election will take place Tuesday, August 14

Strong contrast emerges between Democratic candidates for attorney general

The Connecticut primary election will take place next Tuesday, August 14. If you’re a Connecticut resident and you’re not sure how or where to vote, please visit the secretary of state’s website for more information.

On the Democratic ticket, both candidates for governor and both candidates for lieutenant governor have said they support taxing and regulating marijuana. However, in the race for attorney general, there is a strong contrast between the Democratic candidates’ positions. At a recent debate, former U.S. Attorney Chris Mattei spoke strongly in favor of regulating marijuana, while the other two candidates, state Rep. William Tong and state Sen. Paul Doyle, “expressed reservations.” Additionally, Mattei has criticized Tong for his failure to support the medical cannabis bill when it passed in 2012.

None of the five Republican candidates for governor have spoken publicly in favor of ending marijuana prohibition.

In August, DC will introduce its  subscription-based DC Universe service in beta, in anticipation of a full launch in the fall. The service will offer several previously announced new original scripted television series: Warner Bros TV’s live-action Titans premieres this year, while Doom Patrol and Swamp Thing are set for 2019. Also being prepared for next year are the animated offerings Harley Quinn and the third season of Young Justice.

Signups for the beta launch opened yesterday on the DC Universe website.

“DC Universe is so much more than a streaming service. It’s a welcoming place for everyone to immerse themselves in their own level of DC fandom, with the epic characters, stories, and experiences they have come to expect from DC,” Jim Lee, CCO and publisher, DC Entertainment stated. “We are investing in and creating original, high-quality shows including the new Titans series, and curating the most beloved nostalgic content, while at the same time elevating the comic reading experience to new heights. Nothing this robust has ever been offered to fans before.”

Publisher Dan DiDio also noted that fans can explore related comic-book content after watching an episode of a TV show. He noted, “We wanted the DC Universe comic reader to be a blend of art and technology that would further enhance fan’s experiences of the live-action and animated programming on DC Universe. This hand-curated selection from our decades of comic creations gives fans a thematic digital long-box to carry with them on the device of their choosing or lets them watch exclusive video content on a big screen followed by the comic that inspired it.”

‘StoryBots’ Premiere on Netflix August 12

After racking up more than 400 million online views for their short-form videos, JibJab Bros. Studios’ Ask the StoryBots will debut on Netflix on August 12. The original series inspired by the web video and books brand will feature a voice cast led by Judy Greer (Arrested Development, Archer) with guest roles performed by Whoopi Goldberg, Jay Leno, Weird Al Yankovic and more.

The series centers on the StoryBots, curious little creatures who live in the world beneath our screens. Launched in 2012, StoryBots is the brainchild of the brothers behind eCard and satire video sensations JibJab. In subsequent years, over a million families have created StoryBots accounts, and the mobile app has been downloaded over 4 million times. This year the brand expanded into schools with the free StoryBots Classroom platform for teachers, with StoryBots content and Common Core-aligned games.
