Dates Set for ‘Tom and Jerry,’ ‘Tiger’s Apprentice’

Warner Bros. has announced the official release dates for its Sesame Street live-action musical and Tom and Jerry live-action/animation hybrid movies.

Sesame Street will be released on Jan. 15, 2021, while Tom and Jerry will begin their big-screen adventures on April 16, 2021. The Tom and Jerry movie will be directed by Tim Story (Fantastic Four, Shaft), while Sesame Street will be helmed by Jonathan Krisel and produced by Shawn Levy. Anne Hathaway is rumored to play the lead in the musical.

Meanwhile, Paramount has confirmed that The Tiger’s Apprentice, an animated adaptation of Laurence Yep’s young adult fantasy trilogy series, will be released on February 11, 2022. The story centers on a young San Francisco boy who meets a mysterious talking tiger called Mr. Hu and realizes that he’s the appointed guardian who can protect everyone from an evil ancient phoenix.

Fuse Dates ‘Sugar and Toys’ Premiere, ‘Reverse Brothers’ in Dev

Fuse Media, a multiplatform entertainment media brand for Latino and multicultural youth, unveiled the linear and digital programming slate it is presenting to advertisers during its 2019-2020 upfront meetings on Wednesday. This includes an expansion of the company’s successful strategy of leveraging both homegrown original and acquired content that was initially launched on digital platforms, to develop new shows for its linear channels.

In addition to eight returning series across the Fuse linear network and Fuse Media’s digital platforms – including the largest number of renewals since Fuse re-launched in late 2015 – two new series premiered on Fuse earlier this year, with three to come later in the 2019-20 season, and more in development. Fresh fare includes previously announced animated adult skit show Sugar and Toys, which has been given a June 9 premiere date, and a linear animated series about cosmic hip-hop travelers Reverse Brothers with Ayo & Teo.

Targeting diverse millennial and Gen Z viewers, Fuse’s linear TV network successfully reaches a median audience 15 years younger than cable with an overarching focus on music and music-influenced culture in its programming.

“To successfully target this highly elusive audience, we’ve needed to experiment across platforms and find innovative ways to engage viewers,” said Fuse Media’s Chief Content Officer, J-T Ladt. “We began with our Complex partnership and have seen continued season-to-season growth for Complex x Fuse, which is now in its fourth season. Continuing with this strategy, Fuse is migrating nontraditional IP that already has a built-in multicultural audience to the linear channel. For example, Big Boy’s Neighborhood is also a radio show, The Read is a podcast and Made from Scratch originated as a YouTube format.

“Over the last year, the Fuse Content Studio doubled down on the creation of short-form original video, which resulted in a 250% increase in digital and social viewership. This allowed us to grow our brand across platforms while increasing monetization and audience engagement, and successfully incubating digital series for linear distribution.”

Sugar and Toys (Fuse network; 10 x 30’ episodes, premieres June 9 at 11 p.m. ET/PT) – Fuse’s previously-announced first venture into adult animation, Sugar and Toys will premiere as part of Fuse’s new Sunday night programming block. Created by Carl Jones and Brian Ash, producers of Black Dynamite and The Boondocks, this series brings a wild new twist on the Saturday morning cartoons we all grew up with – but a whole lot less innocent. Adult comedy, social commentary and music culture parody crash the cartoon party, speaking directly to the trends and issues most relevant to a millennial audience, and bookended by host and multi-platinum rapper and actor KYLE (Netflix’s The After Party, www.superduperkyle.com). It is executive produced by Aengus James, Colin King Miller, Nicholaus Goossen, Jones and Ash, with Kyle Harvey serving as co-executive producer and Lalo Alcaraz as consulting producer, and produced by This is Just a Test and 245 Enterprises.

Reverse Brothers with Ayo & Teo (working title) (in development) – Social media masters We Buy Gold have joined forced with Carl Jones and Brian Ash of Black Dynamite and The Boondocks to expand the intergalactic universe of their hit digital series, Reverse Brothers. Reverse Brothers with Ayo & Teo is an animated linear series littered with hip-hop culture and sprinkled with cosmic dust. In every episode, brothers and hip-hop/dance duo, Ayo & Teo face the challenges associated with inheriting the universe’s most popping pawn shop, which is frequented by comet riding con artists, eclectic alien collectors, and hip-hop legends. Reverse Brothers with Ayo & Teo will be produced by We Buy Gold.

New series also include musical guest docu-cooking series Made from Scratch (Fuse network, 8 x 30’), talk/variety podcast spin-off The Read with Kid Fury and Crissle West (WT, Fuse Network, 10 x 30’), Fuse Films (Fuse networks, premieres May 1). Returning titles are Big Boy’s Neighborhood (100 x 120’, March 20), T-Pain’s School of Business (8 x 30’, July 16), Future – History (Fuse, FM and Digital), Lie Detector (Fuse Digital), Mind Massage (Fuse Digital), A Seat With… (Digital), Complex x Fuse, Latinx entertainment awards The ALMAs (in partnership with UnidosUS) and more Fuse Docs starting April 6.

CMC Dates 2018 Playground Interactive Digital Art Exhibition

childrens-media-conference-150

UK’s Children’s Media Conference has announced that the 2018 Playground interactive digital art exhibition for children, families and CMC delegates, will take place July 3-8 in Sheffield at the Millennium Gallery. The week-long event explores everything new in play-along digital technology, from VR games to cutting-edge toys. And, entrance to the exhibition is free!

“This year, the Playground show is subtitled Music/ Response. Through music, we’re able to express every emotion, and with the content we’re asking a number of questions: In these divided times, is music and rhythm key to cohesion? How do we create empathy and understanding through sound? How do we use sound to connect to ourselves and each other?”

In addition to checking out the latest kid-friendly gizmos, young visitors can participate in Maker activities and get their hands dirty with fun arts and crafts with things like “electrical dough” and “electrical paint.” Organizers say the show is suitable for 5- to 12-year olds, but everyone is welcome.

Arts Council England is the new supporter of Playground with its recent agreement to fund the exhibition for the first time. Dubit, the research and strategy company based in Leeds, are Playground Founding Sponsors.

“2018 will be our third event and we are delighted to have financial support from The Arts Council for the first time. It represents a vote of confidence for our work. As a result of this funding, we are able to move into the Millennium Gallery and produce an even bigger and better exhibition for the benefit of local kids and families,” said Kathy Loizou, Co-Founder and Director of CMC.

For more information on the exhibit, visit www.cmcplayground.com.

The 2018 Children’s Media Conference is scheduled for July 3-5 in Sheffield.

Bats to the Past: WB Dates & Trailers English Dub of ‘Batman Ninja’

Batman Ninja

Batman Ninja

After creating a stir with the original Japanese trailer, fans can now check out the English-language spot for the fantastical new feature-length home video release Batman Ninja. The striking CG anime from Warner Bros. Japan and DC Entertainment, and will arrive via Warner Bros. Home Entertainment on Digital starting April 24; and on Blu-ray Steelbook ($ 29.98 SRP), Blu-ray Combo Pack ($ 24.98) and DVD ($ 19.98) on May 8. Rated PG-13, Batman Ninja takes a journey across the ages as Gorilla Grodd’s time displacement machine transports many of Batman’s worst enemies to feudal Japan – along with the Dark Knight and a few of his allies. The villains take over the forms of the feudal lords that rule the divided land, with the Joker taking the lead among the warring factions. As his traditional high-tech weaponry is exhausted almost immediately, Batman must rely on his intellect and his allies – including Catwoman and the extended Bat-family – to restore order to the land, and return to present-day Gotham City.

The English-language voice cast is lead by Roger Craig Smith (Batman: Arkham Origins) and Tony Hale (Veep) as Batman and the Joker, respectively, alongside Grey Griffin (Scooby-Doo franchise) as Catwoman, Tara Strong (Batman: The Killing Joke) as Harley Quinn, and Fred Tatasciore (Family Guy) as Gorilla Grodd; with Yuri Lowenthal (Ben 10: Omniverse) as Robin, Adam Croasdell (Reign) as Nightwing and Alfred, and Will Friedle (Boy Meets World) as Red Robin. The rogue’s gallery also features Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants) as Penguin and Eric Bauza (The Adventures of Puss in Boots) as Two-Face, and on double duty are Tatasciore as Deathstroke, Strong as Poison Ivy, and Friedle as Red Hood.

The movie is directed by by Junpei Mizusaki (Zoo “The Poem of Collected Sunlight,” JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure opening sequence), written by Kazuki Nakashima (Gurren Lagann, Terra Formars) and features character designs by Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki; produced by Warner Bros. Japan. The script was reinterpreted and rewritten for the English version by award-winning screenwriters Lou Chu and Eric Garcia (Supah Ninjas, Afro Samurai); Benjamin Melniker and Michael Uslan are executive producers.

Batman Ninja is an absolute feast for the senses, a stunning spectacle of anime wrapped around a thrill ride of a Batman story,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Vice President, Family & Animation Marketing. “Our partners at Warner Bros. Japan have conjured an impressive addition to the Dark Knight’s canon of entertainment, taking Batman and his friends and foes in an altogether new direction. We can’t wait for fans to see this film.”

Blu-ray bonus features include:

“East / West Batman” (Featurette) – Batman meets the anime medium, as this documentary looks into some of the Western tropes and archetypes, meshed into the world of feudal Japan. East meets West, swords, samurai and giant robots, all playing into the clash between Batman and his foes.

“Batman: Made in Japan” (Featurette) – To make a special film about Batman requires just the right artist to bring the mix of style and energy that is unmistakably anime.  The filmmakers discuss the Japanese character models, influences and design that create a fusion experience into this hyper-real world.

DreamWorks Re-Slates ‘Croods 2,’ Dates ‘Spooky Jack’

The Croods

The Croods

Nearly a year after DreamWorks Animation’s then-new owner NBCUniversal axed plans for the sequel, Universal Pictures has announced that The Croods 2 is back on the feature release slate with a release date of Sept. 18, 2020. The studio has also slated the previously announced Spooky Jack for Sept. 17, 2021.

Originally planned soon after the 2013 release of The Croods (which grossed $ 587.2 million worldwide), the sequel has re-confirmed the return of original voice stars Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, Cloris Leachman and Clark Duke as the charismatic cave family, with Leslie Mann joining the roster as previously announced. Mann’s animation voice credits include Blue Sky’s Rio movies, DreamWorks’ Mr. Peabody & Sherman and LAIKA’s ParaNorman.

The Croods 2 had been set for release this year, then was pushed to a 2018 date last year. Shortly after the date shift, it was announced that Kevin and Dan Hagerman (Trollhunters, The LEGO Movie) were tackling a rewrite, right before the project was canceled amid post-acquisition layoffs. The first, Oscar-nominated film’s directors Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco were to return to the helm.

Announced this summer, Spooky Jack is a kid-friendly collaboration with horror vet Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions (Get Out). The dark comedy centers on three siblings who move into a new house haunted by all manner of beings. Robert Ben Garant (Night at the Museum, The Pacific Rim) is writing the film, with DreamWorks Animation’s Damon Ross producing and Blum as executive producer.

Cartoon Forum Shifts Dates to Avoid General Strike

cartoon-forum-2017-150

Organizers of the 2017 Cartoon Forum have responded to a general strike announcement by French trade unions by moving the dates of this year’s event up a day. To avoid the September 12 strike, attendees will now arrive in Toulouse on Sept. 11, with the TV animation co-production forum running Sept. 12-14.

The strike was called by the CGT (General Confederation of Labor), the largest union group in France in terms of votes and the second-largest in terms of membership at about 710,000. The strike is planned as a show of resistance to labor market reforms proposed by recently elected President Emmanuel Macron.

Cartoon Forum’s general director Mark Vandeweyer and his team have stated that while it is possible the trade unions may cancel the strike, they are cementing these new dates and the decision is final in order to avoid the potential impact of a general strike on air and rail travel. Participants are encouraged to update their hotel bookings and meeting schedules accordingly.

This year’s forum has selected 83 projects, representing a combined budget of about 285 million euros for 470 hours of programming. These will be pitched to 900 broadcasters, investors and producers seeking partnerships from 30 countries. Since the first edition in 1990, Cartoon Forum has facilitated the financing for 700 TV series, representing a total budget of 2.4 billion euros.
