Hideo Kojima proposes “pilot episodes” for next-gen development

Developing AAA games for the next generation of consoles will cost more than ever. But Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima told Edge about a novel idea which might make some developers more comfortable taking risks on long, expensive projects:

“I think there’s a different way of tackling this problem: something similar to a TV series, where you can use pilot episodes to test the waters before you jump completely into the project… It can be distributed via download channels, so the player can try it out before production continues. Something like that wouldn’t take that long to create, maybe a year, and if it’s successful, you can continue.”

Kojima said PlayStation 4′s enhanced download and streaming features make it an ideal place to host such a system, and its social focus means players might even get involved with the development process itself… Hopefully turning out better than Megaman Legends 3.

“I think there’ll be a social aspect to game creation, because it will be more interactive,” Kojima said. “You’ll get user feedback, and I think there’ll be this back-and-forth between users and creators.”

More Metal Gear Rising-like spinoffs very possible, Kojima says

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance may be the first of many Metal Gear spinoffs handled by external studios. Series creator Hideo Kojima told IGN that he was pleasantly surprised by the collaboration with Platinum Games.

“Intially we thought this spin-off with Metal Gear Rising was kind of an exception; it was a new thing for us–but that said, it went remarkably well, and working with Platinum Games we were able to achieve a sort of synergy where the final product was greater than the sum of its parts,” he said.

Kojima said numbered titles in the series will remain under his care, or at least Kojima Productions’. But for offshoots, which can have more flexible styles and storylines, he’s open to anyone who shows enthusiasm and respect for Metal Gear’s fundamentals.

“You know honestly it’s not a matter of choosing a developer in Japan or in the West,” Kojima said. “It’s just finding somebody who can really understand the world and setting of Metal Gear … You need to choose somebody who would understand the subtle nuances of the cultural aspects of the franchise. If we could find somebody who could understand that, who could handle it well, then that’s definitely a possibility.”

Kojima Productions said in December it would be happy to work with Platinum Games on another Metal Gear Rising.

Hideo Kojima doesn’t ‘like being thought of as the Metal Gear guy’

Hideo Kojima may be the best-known single-franchise game developer. His 25 years with the Metal Gear series have defined the majority of his career, and while other projects like cult classic adventure game Snatcher, Zone of the Enders, and helping out with Castlevania: Lords of Shadow have met some success, Snake retains a boa-constrictor hold on his portfolio.

“I’m often misinterpreted,” Kojima told EGM. “I’ve always said that I want to work on original properties, but Metal Gear offers plenty of benefits. The Fox Engine, for example, took a lot of time and money [to create]; we were only able to develop it because it was intended for the next Metal Gear [possibly Ground Zeroes]. In the next game, I’m introducing concepts intended for entirely new intellectual properties using the Metal Gear brand.”

Kojima hopes the groundwork his continued work on the Metal Gear series lays down will allow him to aspire further than the world of sneaking missions and secret societies.

“I’ll admit that I hope my future endeavors are thought of as ‘works by Hideo Kojima’ rather than ‘from the creator of Metal Gear,’” he said. “I haven’t really shown the world what else I might be capable of yet. This may sound pretentious, but I don’t like being thought of as ‘the Metal Gear guy.’ There’s a lot more I can do.”

Kojima Doesn’t Have Much to Reveal About MGS5 Right Now

Metal Gear Solid 4

Although it was teased that Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima would soon share details on both Metal Gear Solid Rising and Metal Gear Solid 5, it turns out he doesn’t actually have a great deal to share, at least when it comes to the latter subject.

Ahead of its upcoming issue, the Official PlayStation Magazine U.K. has published some quotes from Kojima online, and it largely sounds like the sort of thing we’ve become used to hearing from him in recent years.

Zone of the Enders 3DS Teased by Kojima

Zone of the Enders 3DS

Hideo Kojima loves to tease his fans. Zone of the Enders is one of those franchises that fans have been forced to wait ages for a sequel to — the second (and last) one came out in 2003, more than eight years ago. While the announcement of an HD collection of the first two games was good news, it wasn’t a new game. Judging by a picture sent out a short time ago, it’s possible that such a sequel is in the works.

On his English Twitter account, Kojima tweeted out several pictures, including the one above, which he says he saw on “Omori-kun’s desk.” In the background, you can see what looks to be “Z.O.E. 3DS.” As noted by IGN, it looks as if the 3DS text is “ZOE” flipped. However, the fact that there are no periods in between the letters for 3DS (as there are in ZOE) would seem to indicate that this is a tease of Zone of the Enders for 3DS. Whether that’s Zone of the Enders 3 or something else, it’s impossible to say.

Such an announcement would come as a surprise given the timing and the platform. Kojima promised a ZOE sequel would be made eventually — it was a high priority at one point — but the project was “pushed to the back” according to a statement he made last summer.
