The wave of legalization of cannabis across the US, especially when it comes to recreational one, has lead to a launch of numerous cannabis-infused products. Nevertheless, the first thing that comes to mind concerning cannabis is smoking it, eating it, and eventually vaping it. The idea of drinking it wasn’t on the radar until recently, but things are changing fast.

The largest beer import company (measured by sales), Corona-parent Constellation Brands, has become the largest stakeholder in Canadian pot cultivator Canopy Growth while Heineken didn’t hesitate to introduce a range of cannabis sparkling water.  While it may seem that THC has the lead in this ?race for millions?, CBD is actually a bigger game-changer as we’re about to see on Coca-Cola example. 

Health is a Trend

Since Coca-Cola is not only the world’s largest beverage company but also one of the most iconic consumer brands, it’s normal that this company has created the real media buzz when it comes to cannabis-infused drinks. Their talks with Aurora – a leading Canadian cannabis marketing and distribution company – are oriented towards developing beverages which are infused with CBD. The reason is quite obvious – their plan is to capitalize on health benefits of CBD, coming up with a drink that will ease symptoms such as cramping, pain, or inflammation. There are conditions that are better treated with THC, but CBD covers a much wider range, from anxiety to epilepsy.

Marketing campaigns such as holiday polar bear ads and their iconic labeling are not enough anymore to lure customers interest. Coca-Cola would acquire an edgier appearance by tying itself to cannabis, and there is a reason why they’re aiming at CBD. This company has not been keeping up with trends in beverages in the past, which now caught them flat-footed. They’ve missed the functional waters like Vitamin Water and coffee, and they’ve missed the energy drink phenomenon. They desperately need to catch on the latest trend, and cannabis is the biggest one there is at this point. And CBD is even bigger since health has become one of the most important trends of this modern age.

However, precisely due to the fact that health is a new trend, people are incredibly picky about it. There are those who are saying that adding CBD into the ?poison? that causes cancer and diabetes is a huge oxymoron and therefore nothing more than a money grab. There are many companies who may find themselves in a similar situation, but that doesn’t mean that only health and wellness companies will be able to capitalize on CBD-infused drinks.  All it means is that it will require a careful approach and marketing.

Exploring The Market

Kate Heckman: We started creating THC products with CBD for the recreational and medical market in 2014, and very quickly saw the demand skyrocket around CBD products. People wanted to reap the medicinal benefits of CBD without the high you get from THC. We decided to leverage our experience in the cannabis space and launch a CBD-only product line that could be sold online and shipped anywhere.

Are CBD tablets and other products intended for recreational use as well?

Absolutely. The purpose of CBD is not exclusively to treat some sort of health condition. People can take CBD to unwind, just like you would a glass of wine to help relax at the end of the day. Where THC-heavy cannabis products can make some people feel sleepy, CBD can offer a relaxing effect without drowsiness.

Stratos has been actively reaching out to senior citizens to educate them about medical marijuana products and their potential benefits. How can CBD further help that demographic?

Where the buyer needs to beware is understanding that measuring the “hemp oil” content doesn’t necessarily equate to how much CBD is in the product. If you’re looking for CBD without any THC, find products containing CBD isolate. Full-spectrum hemp oil offers full-plant potential by extracting cannabidiol (CBD), phytocannabinoids, fatty acids, flavonoids and trace amounts of THC. CBD isolate distills the full-spectrum extraction and strips out all other properties except CBD.

With looming oversight from the Food and Drug Administration and reports of New York City’s health department cracking down on CBD edibles, how do you see CBD products such as yours being labeled and regulated for national consumption going forward?

We currently use FDA regulations for guidance on how we manufacture, package and label our products. Our team is adept at working within strict regulatory environments, so we feel confident about being able to adapt to any necessary adjustments. For now, we’ll have to wait for the specifics of the FDA language.

How will selling and buying CBD in Colorado be different from the rest of the country, or states that haven’t legalized recreational cannabis?

As the first market to become recreationally legalized, the Colorado market is highly competitive and very sophisticated. Patients and customers have also had access to cannabis and CBD longer, making them very knowledgeable and also discretionary when it comes to what they buy. Having that kind of market insight and customer feedback really helps us fine-tune our approach and product offerings. Regardless of where people purchase, we encourage them to be judicious in their research. Confirm that the product is tested for pesticides, residuals, solvents and microbial growth; that the product was grown in the U.S; and that it actually contains the amount of CBD listed on the label.

What’s Behind the Gluten-Free Trend?

Sept. 16, 2016 — Not that many years ago, the letters “GF” on a restaurant menu would likely have puzzled many people. No longer.

These days, a gluten-free lifestyle has become one of the most popular diet trends in the U.S. One in five people now reduce or eliminate gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley or rye, in their diet, according to a 2015 Gallup poll.

Avoiding gluten is crucial for people with celiac disease. That’s because in them, gluten damages the small intestine and nutrients can’t be absorbed. Its symptoms include diarrhea, constipation, bloating, and pain.

But only about 1% of the population has celiac disease, and that number hasn’t changed in recent years, says Hyun-seok Kim, MD, a doctor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark. In a study released earlier this month, he looked at a national survey taken from 2009 to 2014. Although celiac disease numbers remained stable during that time, the number of people following a gluten-free diet tripled, from 0.5% of the population to nearly 2%.

The study’s researchers say that some who follow a gluten-free diet without a diagnosis of celiac disease may have non-celiac gluten sensitivity. People with non-celiac gluten sensitivity have similar symptoms but don’t have celiac disease. People with a wheat allergy may also follow the diet to prevent an allergic reaction.

But do others need to go gluten-free?

Nearly 100 million Americans say they ate gluten-free products in 2015, says William F. Balistreri, MD, a doctor at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Americans spent an estimated $ 4 billion on gluten-free products in 2015, he says.

Kim’s research has found that women are more likely than men to avoid gluten, and the diet is more popular among 20- to 39-year-olds. It’s also popular among world-class athletes. In another survey, 41% of 910 world-class athletes and Olympic medalists said they followed a gluten-free diet at least half the time, and most had self-diagnosed their gluten sensitivity. Among the many stars reportedly going gluten-free are Gwyneth Paltrow, Russell Crowe, and Kim Kardashian.

MONDAY, July 6, 2015 (HealthDay News) — With the recent U.S. measles outbreak, the issue of vaccine refusal has received growing scrutiny. Now doctors are calling attention to a similar problem: Some parents are shunning the vitamin K shot routinely given to newborns to prevent internal bleeding.

The consequences of that choice can be severe, pediatric specialists say. Infants can quickly become deficient in vitamin K, which can lead to dangerous bleeding in the intestines or the brain.

“If you refuse the shot, you’re rolling the dice with your child’s health,” said Dr. Robert Sidonio Jr., a hematologist and assistant professor of pediatrics at Emory University in Atlanta.

Vitamin K is necessary for normal blood clotting. In older children and adults, bacteria in the gut produce much of the vitamin K the body needs. But that’s not the case for infants.

And breast milk does not supply enough vitamin K — no matter how careful a mother is about her diet, Sidonio said.

“All the kale in the world won’t do it,” Sidonio added.

That’s why, since 1961, U.S. newborns have routinely received a vitamin K shot before they leave the hospital.

But some parents have started saying no to the shot. In 2013, while working at Vanderbilt University’s children’s hospital, in Tennessee, Sidonio saw several cases of vitamin K deficiency bleeding in succession.

It turned out that none of the infants had received their vitamin K shot. Ultimately, Sidonio and his colleagues encountered seven cases of vitamin K deficiency over an 8-month period — with five of those infants suffering gastrointestinal or brain bleeding.

An investigation by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found an “alarming” trend, Sidonio said. Among parents whose babies were born at private birthing centers near Vanderbilt, 28 percent had refused the vitamin K shot.

It’s not clear how common such refusals are nationwide, because there are no tracking systems for them, Sidonio said.

But the trend is not confined to Tennessee. In the latest issue of the Journal of Emergency Medicine, doctors in Ohio describe their own encounter with vitamin K deficiency.

‘Granny hair’ vogue: women embrace trend by going many shades of grey

(Reuters) – While many people try to hide their grey hair, spending hours eradicating the signs of advancing age, going grey may no longer mean reaching out for the dye bottle as “granny hair” is in vogue.

Fashion designers such as Jean-Paul Gaultier, Chanel and Gareth Pugh have all styled their models with silver hair and many have since followed suit.

Spotted on celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Pink, Rihanna, Nicole Ritchie and Kelly Osborne, the grey, white or lavender trend has been embraced by women worldwide with thousands posting pictures on social media sites under “#grannyhair”.

“Granny hair is basically silver hair, any tone of grey in your hair: steel grey, silvery grey, really, really white, platinum-ish with either violet or silver undertones,” New York hair stylist Jan-Marie Arteca said. “That’s the trend.”

Many fashion blogs and magazines say the look is the “hottest” hair color trend for 2015 while website boredpanda asked women to post pictures of their “granny hair” on a page that has since been viewed over 500,000 times.

“I love the grey. Ever since I first saw it in a magazine, I was fascinated,” Jackie, 27, said at the Jeff Chastain Parlor salon during an appointment to dye her dark brown hair grey.

“It’s like something that comes out, like a spark.”

The process can be long however, taking at least two hours to bleach the natural hair and then add the new color. For Jackie, it took seven hours – three bleaches and two color applications – to complete the look.

“Granny hair” does not come cheap – costing from $ 200 up to $ 700, depending on hair color and condition. Touch-ups are required about every four weeks.

‘COPSLIE’ license plate may lead trend on New Hampshire roads

(Reuters) – The New Hampshire driver who got the state’s top court to approve his “COPSLIE” vanity plate could soon be joined on the highways by motorists declaring themselves “BIGTACO,” “MAMS” or “KNUCKL.”

The state Department of Motor Vehicles resumed processing applications on Monday for customized license plates, following a state Supreme Court ruling in May that found it was using “unconstitutionally vague” criteria to reject plate ideas.

That lawsuit was brought by a man who legally changed his name in 2012 to “human” from David Montenegro, and had proposed a plate reading “COPSLIE.” The DMV rejected the plate because it violated its rule against plates that were “offensive to good taste.”

The DMV on Monday began using an interim set of standards that have specific restrictions, including references to “intimate body parts or genitals,” “sexual or excretory acts or functions,” “profanity or obscenity,” and “racial, ethnic, religious, gender or sexual orientation hatred or bigotry.”

The standards, which are modeled after those in neighboring Vermont, must still be officially adopted by the New Hampshire Department of Safety by the end of July.

A backlog of about 2,000 vanity plate applications had built up since it suspended its review following the court ruling.

In 2013 alone, the DMV rejected nearly 80 plate proposals, according to state documents. In addition to “BIGTACO,” “KNUCKL” and “MAMS,” some of the rejected plate ideas included “A55MAN,” “CATLIPS,” “BOO-B,” “DUCK-U” and “DEUX-ME.”

The DMV rejected all of those plates because they were deemed “capable of an obscene interpretation.”

Since the ruling, New Hampshire residents have brought to light plates that inexplicably made the cut, including one that read “A55-MAN,” according to the Nashua Telegraph.

A similar case is playing out in Indiana, where a Superior Court judge found that the motor vehicle division violated free speech rights by rejecting certain plates, such as that of a former police officer who wanted his plate to say “0INK.”

Marijuana Trend Spreads as More States Weigh Votes

Voter support for legal marijuana in Washington and Colorado is spurring similar campaigns in California and three other states that together may bring pot within lawful reach of almost 1-in-5 Americans. Advocates are seeking the signatures of registered voters in California, Arizona, Oregon and Alaska, with a combined population of 49 million, to put the question on ballots in 2014. Colorado and Washington last year legalized marijuana for 12.1 million people.

“Because of Colorado and Washington, it’s created a cannabis tidal wave across the country,” Mike Jolson, 45, a legalization activist in Santa Cruz, California, said by telephone. “We want to capitalize on this wave.”

Washington and Colorado became the first U.S. states to legalize recreational marijuana through referendums last November, defying federal law that has prohibited pot since the 1930s. In August, the U.S. Justice Department said it wouldn’t challenge the states, opening the door for others.

In Washington state, regulators are finalizing rules for growing, processing and selling marijuana ahead of a Dec. 1 deadline to begin issuing licenses. In Colorado, which has finished setting its rules, voters will decide next month whether to tax retail sales at rates of as much as 25 percent.

“Their success in Colorado was very inspiring, and I thought it would be a good time for us to try here,” said Dennis Bohlke, a computer programmer from Phoenix who said he modeled the Arizona initiative after the Colorado measure.

He has to collect 259,213 valid signatures by July 3 to add his measure to the November 2014 ballot.

California Support

In California, more than half of residents support legalizing marijuana, according to a poll by the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California in San Francisco — 52 percent of all adults. Counting only likely voters, the figure is 60 percent. The telephone survey of 1,703 residents was conducted Sept. 10-17 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points for all residents, and 4 percentage points for registered voters.

Because California is the largest state by population, the campaign for legalization needs 504,760 signatures by Feb. 24 to qualify. Jolson said he wants to get volunteers out in the street to collect signatures.

In Alaska, one of the least-populated states, just 30,169 signatures are needed before the legislature goes into session in January, Timothy Hinterberger, 57, a sponsor of the initiative, said by telephone. More than 20,000 have been collected so far, he said. If successful, the question would be added to the primary election ballot in August.

Changing Opinion

Public opinion is shifting toward decriminalizing marijuana use, Hinterberger said.

“With the passage of time, people who are now regular voters have a lot more experience with cannabis and people who are cannabis users,” Hinterberger said.

A majority, or 52 percent, of Americans favor legalizing marijuana use, compared with 45 percent who say it should remain illegal, according to a survey by the Pew Research Center released in April. Young people are the most supportive, the survey showed.

Deputy U.S. Attorney General James Cole said in an August memo to prosecutors that the federal government wouldn’t intervene in the formation of a regulatory structure to oversee recreational marijuana in Colorado and Washington, so long as they prevented out-of-state distribution, access to minors, drugged driving and revenue from going to gangs and cartels.

A Justice Department spokeswoman, Allison Price, didn’t respond to an e-mail seeking comment on the ballot proposals.

‘Accelerate Change’

The Justice Department’s decision “certainly does accelerate change in public opinion and makes us more optimistic about our chances in 2014,” said Dan Riffle, federal policy director at the Marijuana Policy Project, a Washington-based advocacy group. “It makes us more optimistic that the federal government won’t be interfering with these laws when we pass them.”

In addition to recreational use, there are efforts to expand the 20 states that allow medical marijuana, Riffle said.

Ballot proposals to legalize medical marijuana use are being circulated in six states: Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Nebraska, Utah and Wyoming, according to Allen St. Pierre, executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, a Washington-based group that advocates legalization.

Two pot measures are being circulated for signatures in Oregon, where a referendum to legalize recreational pot use failed last year, 53 percent to 47 percent.

Cannabis Commission

One measure to legalize marijuana use requires 116,284 signatures to qualify for the November 2014 ballot, while a second setting up an Oregon Cannabis Commission to regulate its growth and sale requires 87,213 signatures, according to the state. Paul Stanford, 53, of the Hemp & Cannabis Foundation, says he has until July 7 and has collected about 15,000 signatures for each measure.

“We’d like to see Oregon’s economy take advantage of this new market, which would be an economic boon,” Stanford said by telephone.

Marijuana legalization could generate about $ 8.7 billion annually in tax revenue for federal, state and local governments, according to a 2010 report by Jeffrey Miron, who teaches economics at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Municipal governments are also weighing in. In Portland, Maine, voters next month will consider a measure to allow possession of up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana for adults who are at least 21.

Presidential Power

Some marijuana proponents are holding off until the 2016 presidential election, when voter turnout is typically higher.

Chris Lindsey, an attorney from Missoula, Montana, and a legislative analyst at the Marijuana Policy Project, said he’s working toward adding a recreational-marijuana proposal to his state’s ballot in 2016.

“Elections that involve presidential races tend to bring out a younger set of voters and we think we’ll probably benefit from having younger voters,” Lindsey said by phone.

Crytek Turning to Free-to-Play Indicative of a Larger Trend

Crytek is a developer associated with high-end shooters — beautiful games like Crysis — and game engines known for the gorgeous visuals they’re capable of making possible. After spending its early days as a developer of PC exclusives, it decided to go multiplatform in 2008 as a result of it “suffering” from piracy. Once Crytek finishes up with the current slate of games it has in the works, including Ryse for Xbox 360 and Crysis 3 for 360, PS3, and PC, it will be shifting to a model that doesn’t fit on consoles, at least as we currently know them: free to play.

To some gamers, that description is one worthy of bemoaning. Free-to-play games are associated by some with games which either contain the same level of interactivity seen in FarmVille or offer unfair advantages to players willing to fork over money for boosts and better items. While the model may have once upon a time been one which automatically designated a game as unworthy of core gamers’ attention, that is no longer the case. Quality games have adopted the model or been built around it. League of Legends and now Dota 2 show how well free-to-play DotA-style games can work. Even after converting to free to play, Team Fortress 2 remains one of the best multiplayer shooters on the market, and it received better post-launch support — all of it free — in its fourth year than many games do in their first. Numerous MMOs, like Lord of the Rings Online, have found far more success as free-to-play titles than they did when they carried subscriptions. And the recently launched Tribes Ascend is a great deal of fun without ever spending a dime.

‘Chinplants’ Fastest Growing Plastic Surgery Trend

Chin Implants up by 71% vs. 4% Rise in Breast Implants in 2011

April 16, 2012 — A chiseled chin may be the latest “must have” body part.

A new report shows “chinplants,” otherwise known as chin augmentation or chin implants, are the fastest-growing plastic surgery trend among men and women. The popularity of chin implants rose by 71% in 2011, more than breast augmentation, botulinum toxin injection, and liposuction combined.

Researchers say the trend appears to be fueled by a combination of increasing use of video chats, an aging baby boomer population, and competition in the workplace.

“The chin and jawline are among the first areas to show signs of aging,” Malcolm Z. Roth, MD, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, says in a news release. “We also know that as more people see themselves on video chat technology, they may notice that their jawline is not as sharp as they want it to be.”

Other cosmetic procedures that experienced the biggest increases in popularity in 2011 also focus on the face, including:

  • Lip augmentation: 49% increase
  • Cheek implant: 47% increase
  • Laser skin resurfacing: 9% increase
  • Soft tissue fillers: 7% increase
  • Facelift: 5% increase

Top Cosmetic Procedures

Although the number of chin implants grew from 12,077 to 20,680 in 2011, those numbers are dwarfed in comparison to the most popular cosmetic procedure, breast augmentation.

The report shows plastic surgeons performed more than 300,000 breast augmentations in 2011, a 4% increase from 2010.

Other top cosmetic surgical procedures in 2011 were:

  • Nose reshaping: 243,772 (down 3%)
  • Liposuction: 204,702 (up 1%)
  • Eyelid surgery: 196,286 (down 6%)
  • Facelift: 119,026 (up 5%)

Researchers say facelifts are back among the top five cosmetic plastic surgeries for the first time since 2004 and knocked tummy tucks out of the top five.

Among minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, laser hair removal and soft tissue fillers were among the fastest growing.

The top five minimally invasive procedures in 2011 were:

  • Botulinum toxin type A (Botox, Dysport): 5.7 million (up 5%)
  • Soft tissue fillers (Juvederm, Perlane, Radiesse, Restylane, Sculptra, and others): 1.9 million (up 7%)
  • Chemical peels: 1.1 million (down 3%)
  • Laser hair removal: 1.1 million (up 15%)
  • Microdermabrasion: 900,000 (up 9%)

Plastic Surgery Among the Sexes

Researchers say women accounted for 91% of all cosmetic procedures, and the majority of procedures were among people between the ages of 40 and 54.

Among women, the most popular cosmetic plastic surgery procedures in 2011 were:

  • Breast augmentation: 307,000 (up 4%)
  • Nose reshaping: 182,000 (down 4%)
  • Liposuction: 182,000 (up 1%)
  • Eyelid surgery: 168,000 (down 5%)
  • Tummy tuck: 111,000 (no change)

For men, the most popular cosmetic plastic surgeries were:

  • Nose reshaping: 62,000 (down 2%)
  • Eyelid surgery: 29,000 (down 9%)
  • Liposuction: 23,000 (down 3%)
  • Breast reduction: 20,000 (up 8%)
  • Facelift: 11,000 (up 3%)

Wasteland 2 Kickstarter May Start an Admirable Trend

The Wasteland 2 Kickstarter has already more than exceeded its goal of $ 900,000. With 25 days still to go, it’s approaching $ 1.5 million in pledges, a figure which will ensure the game lands on Mac and Linux in addition to PC. It’s nice to see a game like Wasteland that is nearly 25 years old get the opportunity for a sequel thanks to a new method of funding, but this particular Kickstarter may result in more than just a (very) long-awaited sequel being made.

The latest update on the Kickstarter, written by inXile boss Brian Fargo, recounts a story of how Fargo was kind to a young neighbor of his 20 years ago. He used this as the launching point to talk about a Kickstarter initiative he’d like to help start which he is calling Kick It Forward.
